PONTELAND LIONS CLUB was founded in 1981 and serves its community by raising funds and using the money to support both local people and organisations and a number of international projects. The club is part of a worldwide organisation in 200 countries with an HQ in the United States. The main fundraisers are an annual Swimarathon in the Ponteland Pool when teams of swimmers seek sponsorship, the once monthly bookstall outside Somerfields’ supermarket and a Flag Day in December.
This year there are 19 members, both men and women, and they meet on the second Wednesday of the month to conduct formal business. On the fourth Wednesday a variety of social events are planned such as meals out, wine tasting, talks and visits to the theatre or a bowling alley. In the past year many donations have been made including to the Ponteland Stroke Club, the gardeners at Athol House, and a substantial sum to the Toby Henderson Trust, a day centre for autistic children and their families at Stannington. Two seats have been bought for Ponteland Park and high visibility vests for the Friends of the Park. In the wider world they have paid fees for Malawi students through school, helped Water Aid bring clean water to villages in Africa and supported the Nigerian Health Care Trust. All the money raised is put to good use; none of it is used for administration or expenses. Local schools have taken part in the national Peace Poster competition, which has been won two years running by pupils at Ponteland Middle School, and we plan annual social occasions for less able people and pensioners.
The Lions welcome new members, all talents can be used, more members means more money raised and it is a way of supporting the community to which we belong. Even a couple of hours a month helping to sell books will make a difference.
