PONTELAND PARTY IN THE PARK 2008

A record-breaking crowd enjoyed a warm afternoon of fun and activities at the Party in Ponteland Park opened by Ponteland’s own Councillor and Mayor, Irene Brumwell. It was a fantastic community event, in wonderful weather, when many local clubs and organisations displayed their wares for the delectation of families from near and far. New events this year were the Capoerai Brazilian dance group who gave an athletic display of their prowess, the blue bin sculptures made by children from the waste we put in said bins, the Community Band who gave a fantastic first performance and many more than there is space to mention. The Town Council took a stand this year, as did Castle Morpeth who financially supported a number of groups and activities.
The whole event is indebted to sponsors; the Airport who gave a substantial cash donation, the traders who supplied food, Snaith’s, Sainsbury’s, and Davidson’s, the ladies from the churches who baked cakes, and the firemen who come each year and this time pumped water out of the Pont to hose the hot kids. And that is just a few of the many! The music was superb with performances from the Darras Hall First School, the Whistling Sheep and the Pongos.
The four churches in Ponteland with Andy Anderson leading the team deserve a lot of praise for such smooth organisation. The final touch was to present retiring Constable John Gray with a panoramic photo of the village green from the community which he has served so well for the last fifteen years.
